The Fake Executive Call
An attacker researches your company. They find out who the owner or CEO is — LinkedIn, your website’s About page, a YouTube video, a podcast appearance. They clone the voice. They call a member of your team (targeting bookkeeping, accounts payable, or whoever handles transfers) and instruct them to send an urgent wire. The voice sounds exactly right. The story involves a deal that can’t wait and a request to keep it quiet.
This is a variation of Business Email Compromise that’s existed for years — but voice cloning makes it dramatically more convincing. People who are trained to be skeptical of emails are much less skeptical of a call from their boss’s voice.
The Vendor Impersonation Call
Your regular IT vendor, accountant, or supplier gets cloned. The fake vendor calls to say your payment went to the wrong account and asks you to resend to a new one. Or they “confirm” updated banking information for future invoices. You’ve spoken to this person a hundred times. The voice is correct. You confirm the change.
The Video Call Escalation
For higher-value targets, attackers use video avatars — AI-generated video that shows a real-time face. It’s less common in small business targeting right now, but the Hong Kong case proves it’s no longer exotic. As the tools get cheaper and easier, this attack will move downstream to smaller businesses within the next 12–18 months.
How to Tell If You’re Being Deepfaked
Here’s where it gets tricky: the whole point of a convincing deepfake is that you can’t tell. That said, there are signals to watch for:
- Unusual urgency: Real executives and vendors don’t typically demand same-day wire transfers with no paper trail. Urgency is a social engineering tactic, deepfake or not.
- Requests for secrecy: “Don’t mention this to anyone yet” is a massive red flag, always.
- Video glitches: Current deepfake video still struggles with hair edges, earrings, rapid head movements, and blinking patterns. If the video quality seems slightly off or the person seems unusually still, pay attention.
- Audio artifacts: Voice clones can sound slightly flat or robotic at the edges of certain phonemes. The emotion sometimes doesn’t quite match the words.
- The request itself is out of character: Trust your gut. If something feels off about the ask, even if the voice sounds right, that instinct matters.
The One Policy That Stops This Attack Cold
Here’s the good news: you don’t need AI to fight AI. You need a policy.
It’s called an out-of-band verification protocol, and it’s embarrassingly simple: any request involving money movement or sensitive access changes requires a second confirmation through a completely different channel.
Your “boss” calls asking for a wire? Before you move a single dollar, you hang up and call them back on the number you already have in your contacts — not the one that called you. You don’t reply to the email. You don’t call the number they gave you. You use a contact you already trust.
If the request is legitimate, the real person will be completely understanding. If it was a deepfake, the attack dies right there.
Add these to that policy:
- Establish a code word with your team for urgent financial requests — a word or phrase that only real team members know. Yes, this feels old-fashioned. It works.
- No wire transfers without written authorization in your official system — period. A phone call, even from the CEO’s real voice, is not authorization for a transfer.
- Train your team specifically on this threat. Deepfake awareness needs to be part of your security training now. This isn’t theoretical anymore.
What Your Business Should Be Doing Right Now
The technological arms race between deepfake creation and detection is ongoing, and right now, creation is winning. Detection tools exist but aren’t reliable enough to depend on for real-time business decisions. That means your primary defense is procedural, not technological.
- Audit who handles financial transactions and what authorization is required
- Implement a written policy for wire transfers that requires dual approval and out-of-band verification
- Include deepfake scenarios in your security awareness training — your team needs to know this threat exists
- Limit how much executive voice and video content is publicly available — every podcast clip and conference video is training data for a clone
- Brief your leadership team — many executives don’t know their voice is clonable from public content

Deepfakes are one part of a broader shift: AI is lowering the cost and increasing the sophistication of social engineering attacks. The old model of “train employees to spot weird-looking emails” isn’t enough anymore.
